Unlike many private equity firms that move upmarket as they raise successively larger funds, we have remained devoted to the lower end of the middle-market throughout our history.
We have invested in over 70 companies since raising our first fund in 1990 and have supported these platform companies complete over 150 add-on acquisitions. During this timeframe we have guided companies through good and bad times, strong and weak markets, and addressed nearly every circumstance faced by rapidly growing businesses. We have assisted our companies in managing through recessions, market bubbles, and one-time adversities (e.g. hurricanes, lawsuits, customer losses, etc.). We have the experience to help companies achieve their growth objectives and build value under all business and market conditions.
We have an outstanding record of building market leading companies and realizing significant value through achieving successful exit strategies. We have helped our portfolio companies achieve over 50 successful exits including sales, mergers, IPO's, recaps and public offerings. The impressive list of high quality buyers of our portfolio companies attests to the success of our investment strategy. These include leading private equity firms and Fortune 1000 companies. We think outside-the-box to achieve desired results or solve problems. We have pursued non-standard approaches in order to maximize value such as merging companies into public shells to facilitate acquisition strategies, structuring transactions with SPACs (Special Purpose Acquisition Company) in order to maintain voting and management control, and creatively structuring acquisitions in order to minimize leverage and dilution. Our vast experience of executing and financing acquisition programs has provided us with a toolbox of strategies that we can deploy to enable our portfolio companies to achieve success.
Since our founding over 20 years ago, we have developed a stellar reputation within the investment community for our integrity and dependability, and for honoring our commitments. This has enabled us to form strong bonds with our portfolio company CEOs, often becoming long-term trusted advisors. This is evidenced by the fact that we have backed several of our portfolio company CEOs in subsequent ventures and many have become limited partners in our funds.
